What we ask HomeCanon every week

The AI assistant we built into HomeCanon is the feature we use most ourselves. The questions homeowners ask it are different in kind from what they'd type into Google.

The questions

A search engine gets: "how often should I change my HVAC filter".

Ask HomeCanon gets: "when did I last change my HVAC filter?".

The difference is everything. The first question has a thousand answers depending on context. The second has one specific answer — and it's in your data.

What we actually ask

Here's a week of real questions from the team's own homes:

  • "Did I service the water heater last fall?"
  • "What's overdue this week?"
  • "What should I do before winter?"
  • "Which appliance is most behind on maintenance?"
  • "When does the dishwasher warranty expire?"
  • "What's the highest-impact task I can do today?"

Each one ends up being faster than scrolling the Today screen. The assistant grounds its answer in your appliance roster, your recent task history, and the maintenance template library.

What it doesn't see

  • Personal notes on tasks — unless you reference them directly in the question
  • Document contents (PDFs, photos) — only their existence
  • Anything outside HomeCanon

Anthropic doesn't train on this data. Each query sends a compact snapshot to Claude and gets an answer back; nothing is retained for model training.

The monthly meter

Pro tier includes 20 queries per month. For most homes that's plenty — we average four to six a week across the team. The meter is visible at the bottom of the chat screen so you can pace yourself.
